CALENDAR OF EVENTS

    Throughout the year, the Highlands Plateau Greenway offers a variety of programs related to the Greenway. Members, volunteers, and visitors are invited to the following events in 2010:

EVENTS SCHEDULED IN 2010

Greenway Trail Building
on the Big Bear Pen Trail
Third Saturday of each month.
Please sign up before each work trip if at all possible. Meet at the Highlands Recreation Park, Civic Center building, at 9:00 a.m. We will continue work on the Big Bear Pen Trail. Please contact Hillrie Quin at 526-2385 or email him at hmquin@verizon.net to sign up.

Greenway Trail Building
on the Recreation Park Loop Trail
Eight volunteers, guided by Fred Lashley, used a high line to transport and install 300-400 pound stone steps along a steep part of the Rec Park loop trail.

Work Trips on the Greenway Trail
The Recreation Park Loop Trail and Rhododendron Park Trail on Big Bear Pen Mountain.

Completion of the Rec Park Loop Trail
We finished work on the Loop Trail in the Rec Park, and a new bridge was installed over Mill Creek.
August through
September
Dedication Ceremony
Approximately 50 people attended the dedication of the Rec Park Loop Trail and the new Mill Creek Bridge, officiated by Mayor Don Mullen.
October 6
Work on the Big Bear Pen Trail
With the help of Fred Lashley and crew, the Big Bear Pen Trail was cleared, cribbed, and graveled from the upper switchback of Big Bear Pen Road to the power line, including a spur to below the lower switchback of Big Bear Pen Road.

ANNUAL MEETING Highlands Recreation Park
on North 4th Street
June 28
Greenway Trail Building
on the Recreation Park Trail
We had 16 volunteers turn out for our first work trip. We created about 200 feet of new trail north of Mill Creek near the bridge.
September 6
Greenway Stone Step Construction
on the Recreation Park Trail
We had 10 volunteers turn out for our September work trip. We created a new trail to the bench on the south bank of Mill Creek near the bridge and built rock steps ascending from the bridge toward the road.
September 20
Check Steps, Rock Cribbing, and Trail
Construction on the Recreation Park Trail
We had a great turnout for our October work trip. Ten adults volunteered and the Eckerd Camp had 11 campers and two adults participating. We added about 150 feet of new trail and rehabilitated a section of washed-out trail with rock and earth steps in the Rec Park.

Construction on the Recreation Park Trail
We continued our work in the Rec Park near the Mill Creek Bridge and on the upper loop trail.

Highlights in 2008


New Equipment: The Town of Highlands has purchased a Canycom tracked wheelbarrow and a Yanmar mini-excavator for use by the Highlands Plateau Greenway. Several greenway members have already received their training and have been using the equipment as part of our trail construction work on the Recreation Park Trail.
